Transitioning Beyond Street Life: The Journey of Payamma with the rescue rehabilitation of Theruvoram NGO

The elderly woman rescued at North Paravur

For over 15 years, a mother has suffered the harsh realities of homelessness on the streets of North Paravur. Despite being known to almost all residents of the area, her problems remained largely unnoticed until recently. With children and relatives existing, yet unwilling to provide care, she faced abandonment and neglect. Living in streets, she suffered days without bathing, emitting a foul odour from her body. Her hair appears tangled, mirroring the devastation of her circumstances.

She survived by getting help from people she didn’t know, getting food and support from them to keep going. Sometimes, she would find a place to stay near the sidewalks of local shops. Her situation caught the attention of concerned citizens, prompting them to alert Theruvoram NGO to intervene. With the cooperation of Paravur CI and the Municipality, her welfare was entrusted to the NGO’s care.

After the grooming process

Upon her transfer to the NGO’s protection, efforts were made to restore her dignity and well-being. Under the watchful eyes of MSW social workers, she underwent grooming and hygiene procedures, shedding the physical manifestations of her suffering. Now under the guardianship of Theruvoram NGO, she finds refuge from the harsh realities of life on the streets.Notable among her peculiar habits was her tendency to hoard items indiscriminately, a behaviour perhaps borne out of the scarcity she faced daily. Additionally, her struggle with memory loss added another layer of complexity to her already challenging circumstances.

In conclusion, the plight of this mother serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by marginalized individuals within our communities. Yet, through the compassionate intervention of organizations like Theruvoram NGO, there remains hope for a brighter future for those who have been orphaned not just by family, but by society itself.
