The Unseen Struggles of Khurshid: A Story of Neglect and the Compassion of Theruvoram NGO
The bustling streets of Ernakulam are often a witness to countless stories of hardship and resilience. Among these is the story of Khurshid, a 36 year-old man whose life took a tragic turn following a severe injury and subsequent neglect. This narrative highlights not only his plight but also the commendable efforts of Murugan and the Theruvoram NGO in extending a helping hand.
Khurshid, originally from Kerala, has been residing alone in Ernakulam for a long time after a fallout with his family. His life has been a series of small jobs, ranging from working in shops and hotels to serving as a lodge security guard and a sales manager. Despite these efforts, Khurshid faced a downward spiral after losing his job. The complexity of his background is accentuated by his mixed accent, switching between Trivandrum and Malappuram Malayalam, leaving his exact hometown a mystery.

Two years ago, while walking through the streets of Kaloor, Khurshid was hit by a bus. The accident left him with a spinal cord injury that progressively worsened, causing his back to bend and rendering him unable to turn his neck. Without sufficient funds, Khurshid's attempts to seek medical help were in vain, pushing him into deeper despair.
As his condition deteriorated, Khurshid found himself unable to work and began relying on the charity of social workers and passersby for food. His mental health declined sharply due to his isolation and untreated injuries, leading him to live under the North Railway Bridge in Ernakulam. In his state of depression and loneliness, he neglected basic hygiene and resigned himself to life on the streets.
Khurshid's plight caught the attention of the Ernakulam General Hospital staff, where he was initially taken by concerned citizens. However, due to the absence of bystanders to care for him and inadequate treatment facilities, his situation did not improve. It was during this time that the Sub-Inspector (SI) of Ernakulam Central Police noticed him and reached out to Murugan, the Secretary of Theruvoram NGO.
Murugan had previously made several unsuccessful attempts to hospitalize Khurshid, who refused assistance. However, upon hearing about Khurshid’s worsening condition from the SI, Murugan decided to intervene once more. When he arrived at the site, Murugan was deeply moved by the fact that countless people had passed by without offering help. Determined to make a difference, he acted swiftly.
Murugan, along with his team from Theruvoram, managed to transport Khurshid to Kottayam Medical College in an ambulance. Despite Khurshid's reluctance to provide his home address or go to any institution for the destitute, Murugan ensured he was admitted to the hospital. This was only possible through a letter of authorization from the Ernakulam North Police Station, highlighting the critical role of legal and institutional support in such cases.

At Kottayam Medical College, Khurshid is now receiving the treatment he desperately needs. However, his desire to live independently, even by selling lottery tickets, complicates his future care. The hospital can only transfer him to a government institution for the destitute with his consent, which he continues to refuse.

The work done by Murugan and the Theruvoram NGO stands out in this narrative. Their persistent efforts, despite numerous setbacks, reflect a deep commitment to social welfare. Murugan’s ability to mobilize resources and navigate bureaucratic hurdles ensured that Khurshid received medical attention, showcasing the impact of compassionate and dedicated social work.
Murugan’s actions highlight the significant role NGOs play in addressing the needs of the most vulnerable. Theruvoram’s intervention not only provided immediate relief but also paved the way for Khurshid’s long-term recovery. Their work serves as an inspiring example of how empathy, perseverance, and coordinated efforts can bring about meaningful change in the lives of those who are often overlooked.
Khurshid’s story is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by many individuals living on the margins of society. It calls for greater awareness, compassion, and systemic support to ensure that no one is left to suffer in silence. The heroic efforts of Murugan and the Theruvoram NGO remind us that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope and help available.
